Routine colorectal cancer screening could be a lifesaver

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in men and women in the United States, resulting in nearly 50,000 deaths a year, according to the American Cancer Society.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, designed to promote awareness of screening, prevention, and treatment of this disease that starts in the colon or rectum. So now is a good time to start a conversation with your doctor about potential risks.

Screening can detect colorectal cancer in its earliest stages, allowing for better treatment outcomes. The American Cancer Society recommends screening starting at age 50, though people at higher risk may need to start screening earlier.

All TeamCare wellness services, including colorectal screenings and routine colonoscopies, are covered at 100 percent with no deductible or co-insurance when performed by providers in your PPO network.

Simple changes you can make to help lower your risk, include:

  • Keep a healthy weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Add a little exercise to your life
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Minimize red and processed meats in your diet
  • Schedule colorectal screenings and routine colonoscopies
